Hans Friederich
Dr Hans Friederich FRGS is a Dutch geographer with a PhD from the University of Bristol, UK. He is the Registrar of the SUNx Malta Climate Friendly Travel Registry. He is global Ambassador of the World Bamboo Organisation and Senior Advisor to the European Bamboo Programme which is managed by Bamboologic in the Netherlands. He is a Member of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development. From 2014 to 2019, Hans was the Director-General of the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation(INBAR), a treaty-based Inter-Governmental Organisation with its Headquarters in Beijing, China. Prior to his appointment in China, Hans was the Regional Director for Europe of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) based in the Headquarters in Switzerland, and he is currently standing as candidate from Western Europe for the IUCN Council. He has previously lived and worked in Botswana, Kenya, Thailand and Vietnam. Currently, he is living in Gozo, Malta |
Olly Wheatcroft
Olly Wheatcroft is an Environmentalist with over 20-years’ experience focused on Sustainable Development and Tourism. He is the Programme Manager for SUNx Malta, a system for Tourism destinations and stakeholders to build Climate Resilience in line with the Paris 1.5oC target through Climate Friendly Travel. Olly worked for 8 years at responsibletravel.com with companies and destinations committed to ensuring that Tourism benefited local people, whilst minimising its environmental impact. This involved specialising in Digital Marketing, an area of great interest which he continues to develop due to its ever-increasing importance. He has worked for several different Tourism start-up ventures in an operational and marketing capacity and found his perfect role in the development of SUNx Malta due to its focus on Climate Change and Sustainable Tourism. |

Climate Friendly Travel: Case for small communities and entrepreneurs
Recently UN Secretary General Guterres noted the importance of tourism in a post COVID-19 socioeconomic recovery. Calling for “Climate Friendly Travel” as a response to the existential Climate Crisis. SUNx Malta is working, to deliver “Climate Friendly Travel” with the support of the government of Malta, and WTTC – low carbon: SDG linked: Paris 1.5. We created two Climate Friendly Travel tools to support transformation – a Registry of 2050 Ambitions and a Climate Champions Diploma, to train tomorrows leaders. We will discuss how small and medium stakeholders can benefit from these programs.
