Volume 60

Working with locals to develop rural tourism experiences on the Arabian Peninsula
Both Oman and Saudi Arabia have identified tourism as a new economic sector. In Saudi Arabia, new coastal resort destinations are being developed that offer beach experiences. In both countries, the main cities (Muscat, Jeddah and Riyadh) provide sophisticated nightlife and entertainment. This webinar looks at tourism outside these hotspots. The smaller cities and rural areas of Oman and Saudi Arabia are the custodians of amazing historical sites and traditional culture and heritage. Tourism can be a way to preservation and continuation of these rich resources. The four speakers will discuss examples of rural tourism development, from heritage accommodation and development of an archaeological site to agritourism. These smaller scale developments can provide the residents with increased income while allowing them control of their businesses.
