James “Tim” Wallace is an Emeritus Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at North Carolina State University. Since 1994, he was the founder and director of the NC State Ethnographic Field School. His program took place in Hungary, Costa Rica and most recently in Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. This highly respected program is still running in Lake Atitlan after more than 25 years. Additionally, Dr. Wallace has organized, led and supervised service-learning programs abroad in many countries. Currently he is collaborating with colleagues in Facultad de Arte y Diseño at Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Bogotá, Colombia leading summer field school programs exploring experiential design techniques to support heritage conservation and economic viability in Colombia’s Caribbean region. |

Adam has been a part of NC State’s Leadership and Civic Engagement team since 2006 and is responsible for the Alternative Service Break program. With 22 program partnerships throughout the year, he is responsible for the selection of team leaders, training of advisors, and coordination of all travel logistics. Adam has developed and instructs a 3-credit course for team leaders to train and prepare them for all aspects of trip planning including budgeting, risk and safety, reflection, and critical thinking. He also works with the global community partners as well as campus partners to ensure that a high level of learning takes place in a safe environment. Adam is a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach who provides team building and leadership training to the campus community and beyond. He enjoys the development of leadership potential in others. Adam is also active on a number of committees on campus and supports the collaboration of all Leadership and Civic Engagement programming. |
A scholar-practitioner of international education, Dr. Anthony C. Ogden completed a doctorate at Pennsylvania State University in Educational Theory and Policy with a dual title in Comparative and International Education. He has held senior leadership positions at Pennsylvania State University, the University of Kentucky, Michigan State University, and the University of Wyoming. He currently holds faculty appointments at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies in Monterey and the American College of Education, where he teaches a range of courses related to comprehensive internationalization. A three-time Fulbright recipient, Ogden’s research interests focus broadly on international higher education. His most recent publications include Education Abroad and the Undergraduate Experience: Critical Perspectives and Approaches to Integration with Student learning and Development (Stylus, 2019) and Education Abroad: Bridging Scholarship and Practice (Routledge, 2020). A noted international education expert by the U.S. Department of State, Ogden has conducted formal program evaluations in 25 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. Currently, Ogden is also a partner in the Gateway International Group, an organization dedicated to supporting client institutions with harnessing new and expanded strategies for the next generation of international education. |
Morais is an Associate Professor of Sustainable Tourism and a Tourism Extension Specialist at North Carolina State University. He is also the lead in(ve)stigator of People-First Tourism Lab, a participatory action research collective started at NC State and now involving researchers and community development partners globally (P1tLab.ncsu.edu). Morais supports small communities and microentrepreneurs across the State of North Carolina and internationally. Morais integrates the insight and energy of an increasingly rich team of scholars in disciplines ranging from Cultural Anthropology, Humanitarian Engineering, Social Business, Community Psychology, Design, and Computer Science. His disciplinary home is Social-psychology and through this lens he investigates how tourism microentrepreneurship is developed and how it may affect host communities ability to harness economic opportunity in their own terms. |
Daniel Valdez is a forest engineer graduated from the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo. He is the Technical Advisor of Ejido Playa Grande and founding partner of the company Rancho Ecoturístico Playa Grande, where he supervises the business of his community providing accommodation, food and adventure activities to tourist groups from the neighboring Puerto Vallarta resorts. Although Daniel was born and raised in the state of Durango, he has been living in the city of Puerto Vallarta for more than 15 years, providing technical advice to the Ejido Playa Grande and others in the region. |
