Federica Iellici
Federica Iellici boasts over a decade of experience in the United Nations system as an international development professional. Her career is marked by a strong commitment to advancing tourism and culture to foster local development and enhance community well-being. Currently serving as a Programme Officer at the UN Tourism Market Intelligence, Policies and Competitiveness Department, Federica plays a key role in shaping and implementing the Tourism for Rural Development Programme, working across four axes: advocacy and outreach, skills development, knowledge creation, and on the ground interventions. Within this framework, she oversees the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism Network and spearheads the Tourism for Rural Development Small Grants Programme. Previously at UNESCO, Federica managed a diverse portfolio of projects focusing on heritage protection and cultural diversity promotion, empowering local communities for sustainable development across East Asia. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and a Master of Public Administration in International Development from Tsinghua University, Beijing. |
Abd Sanih Nasri
Mr. Abd Sanih Nasri is currently the Chairman of Koperasi Pelancongan Mukim Batu Puteh Kinabatangan Berhad., an award-winning community-based ecotourism cooperative. More known as KOPEL Bhd., this cooperative is located in Mukim Batu Puteh, Kinabatangan (Sabah). As the KOPEL Bhd. Chairman, Mr. Abd Sanih Nasri has excelled in promoting this cooperative both locally and internationally by emphasizing the rich biodiversity, environmental initiatives, and cultural heritage of the locals (Orang Sungai). He has successfully helped elevate KOPEL Bhd. and the Batu Puteh community at the State, national, and international levels simultaneously promoting Sabah and Malaysia to the world in the fields of cooperative development, ecotourism, and environmental causes. Under his leadership, Abd Sanih Bin Nasri has played an important role in assisting the many local and international recognitions which KOPEL Bhd. has won over the years. |

Gregory Bakunzi Over the past years, I have gained experience working as a Rwandan tour organizer and guide for various international tour operators. My professionalism and reliability, along with my exceptional understanding of the needs and desires of international visitors, have gained me renown among clients and respect among the members of local communities. I am a co-founder and president of the Ruhengeri Community Eco-Tourism Association, a local association of people collaborating to enhance tourism development in Rwanda. I rely on a network of contacts in the area, all of whom are happy to project. With my experience, know-how and contacts, am take part in my able to l make your bespoke visitor experience memorable, while also with an experienced benefiting the locals as much as possible. I Wayan Budiarta I earned bachelor's degree in Education from Institute of Teacher Training School Singaraja in Bali, Indonesia. I dedicate myself in education and also preserving tradition and culture in my village. I currently serve as the leader of Penglipuran tourism village. Roads to Sustainability: Community Engagement in Best Tourism Villages
Tourism for rural development is increasingly recognized as essential for preserving cultural heritage and environmental integrity while fostering economic growth. This webinar will present three representatives from the Best Tourism Villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) in Rwanda, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The panel will present case studies highlighting key community strategies and practices to balance tourism growth with sustainability goals. Active community participation in decision- making processes and effective management of natural and cultural resources play a crucial role in achieving long-term sustainability. The villages aim to enhance their sustainability efforts through community involvement, emphasizing the importance of local knowledge, collaboration, and continuous adaptation to changing circumstances.
