Hera Oktadiana
Hera is an adjunct Associate Professor at James Cook University Australia. She is also affiliated with Trisakti School of Tourism Indonesia. Hera earned her Ph.D from the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She has been the Head of Hospitality and Tourism Departments at Bina Nusantara University (BINUS) and Bunda Mulia University, and Deputy Manager for Trisakti’s International Hotel and Tourism study program. Hera has various publications and receives awards for her research and publications, including from the Indonesia’s Ministry of Research and Technology in 2020 and John & Wiley Publication in 2022. She is on Editorial Board of several international tourism journals. She is now the Regional Vice President of the International Tourism Studies Association (ITSA) and a visiting professor at University of Education (Tourism Faculty) Indonesia. |
Destha Titi Raharjana
Destha graduated from Gadjah Mada University Indonesia and is currently working as a researcher at the Center for Tourism Studies at Gadjah Mada University. Destha has interest in tourism development research and community services, particularly in the field of cultural tourism, ecotourism, community-based tourism, and sustainable tourism. Destha is actively involved in Desa Wisata Institute (DWI) or Tourism Village Institute of Yogyakarta in dealing with community participations. |
Winda Mercedes Mingkid
Winda earned her doctoral degree from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Japan and a Master degree from University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. She is currently working at University of Sam Ratulangi, Manado, Indonesia. She was appointed as the Vice Dean in the university from 2010 to 2018. Winda is actively engaged in various organizations in Indonesia as a leader and a committee member. She also served as the auditor of tourism village sustainability certification program and sustainable tourism destination program. Winda was a judge of Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Awards (ISTA) in 2017, 2018, and 2019. She assisted the national secretariat of Sustainable Tourism Destination of Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in 2014 – 2018. |
Saptarining Wulan
Wulan is a lecturer of Nusantara Local Gastronomy at Trisakti School of Tourism, Jakarta, Indonesia. She previously worked as a consultant at the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Village, Disadvantages Areas and Transmigration, responsible for the development of community empowerment. She received her doctoral degree from University of Indonesia and Post Graduate Diploma from University of Canberra, Australia. Her doctoral research is in the area of sustainable agriculture and the climate change mitigation She has produced numerous varieties of sago-based food products. She received an award from Tempo national magazine as the Pioneer of Sago Innovation in 2015. She is an Ambassador of Nusantara Local Food WWF Indonesia (2020-2022), and the Founder of ‘Putri Sagu’. |
Sugeng Handoko
Sugeng holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. He has been very active in various organizations and community-based activities. Sugeng is also a supporter of UNESCO Global Geopark’s Gunung Sewu Indonesia, a sociopreneur, an advocate of community-based tourism, and a youth promoter. Sugeng has received various awards such Hilo Green Leader, Conservation Advocate of Yogyakarta Province and Indonesia, and Culturepreneur Award. Currently, Sugeng is managing Nglanggeran tourism village Yogyakarta and Nglanggeran volcano. With his team, he led Nglanggeran tourism village in receiving Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Award 2017 and ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Award 2018. Nglanggeran was selected to represent Indonesia to participate in the UNWTO’s international competition 2021 on the Best Tourism Villages. |
Tatak Sariawan
Tatak Sariawan is the coordinator and the head of Candirejo Tourism Village union in Magelang Regency Central Java. He is also the head of communication forum of Central Java’s tourism villages, and the pest and disease observer for Central Java’s agricultural office. He has been involved in the development of Candirejo tourism village since 2003. Under his leadership, Candirejo is selected as one of the 16 certified sustainable tourism villages in Indonesia. This certification is awarded by the Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. In 2021, the Ministry chose Candirejo as the center of socialization events for the 2021 Indonesian Tourism Village Award (ADWI) due to its rich natural and cultural resources. Tatak also led Candirejo in becoming the first village to be designated as a tourist village in Magelang Regency of Central Java and to receive award and certification from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy for its achievements as a sustainable tourism village. |

Successful Practices from Indonesia
This webinar discusses how rural tourism contributes to socioeconomic wellbeing of local communities. Villages with distinct appeals have the potential to become successful tourism destinations. Micro-scale tourism development can offer the means and ways to spark economic recovery from the pandemic stagnation.
The webinar will highlight the success stories of two leading tourism villages in Indonesia: Nglanggeran and Candirejo. Both villages are popular among tourists who favor unique cultural and natural settings and Nglanggeran was recently recognized as a Best Tourism Village by UNWTO in 2021. These destinations have already received several national and international awards, standing as tourism development models for emulation. The panel will offer insights into their management practices and how tourism has promoted sustainability of the rural economy, aided by community empowerment and engagement.
